MINERALS are "Medicine" ❤

Minerals are MEDICINE

What are minerals?
Minerals are essential nutrients that are needed to keep you healthy. Minerals do not give you energy or calories, but help with other functions in your body. Minerals are elements that originate in the soil and cannot be created by living things, such as plants and animals. Yet plants, animals and humans need minerals in order to be healthy. Plants absorb minerals from the soil, and animals get their minerals from the plants or other animals they eat. Most of the minerals in the human diet come directly from plants, such as fruits and vegetables, or indirectly from animal sources. Minerals may also be present in your drinking water, but this depends on where you live, and what kind of water you drink. Minerals from plant sources may also vary from place to place, because the mineral content of the soil varies according to the location in which the plant was grown.  Which is also why the health of our soil directly impacts the health of our bodies.  The soil is where our minerals come from.  Because of the drastic changes in our soils mineral content due to modern agriculture, we are a mineral deficient society.  Supplementing with additional minerals is now essential to our health. The two kinds of minerals are: macrominerals and trace minerals. Macro means "large" in Greek (and your body needs larger amounts of macrominerals than trace minerals). The macromineral group is made up of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride, and sulfur.  A trace of something means that there is only a little of it. So even though your body needs trace minerals, it needs just a tiny bit of each one. Trace minerals includes iron, manganese, copper, iodine, zinc, cobalt, fluoride, and selenium.

What role do Minerals play in my body?
Minerals play a variety of roles in cells and physiology.  The more minerals you absorb, the more your body has what it needs to carry out it's vital processes.  When your cells have the food / minerals they need you no longer have to borrow minerals from your teeth, bones or tissue to function. This keeps you in an anti-aging state because the body is not breaking down itself to carry out some of the following processes:  Minerals (e.g. calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, etc.) are used to make structures such as bone, Minerals are vital for signaling functions (e.g. release of calcium induces muscle contraction), Minerals play thousands of vital roles as co-factors for enzyme functions, Minerals (e.g zinc and magnesium) play important roles in stabilizing membranes and DNA, Minerals (e.g. zinc fingers) play vital roles in gene expression, Minerals play vital roles in maintaining cellular electrolyte balance (e.g. sodium, magnesium and potassium), Minerals (e.g. magnesium) play vital roles in regulating ion channels in cell membranes, Minerals (e.g. iron in hemoglobin) play vital roles in transport of other nutrients.

What do Minerals have to do with aging and disease?
It is very simple.  If you do not have the minerals needed to carry out the above processes your health is in a state of decline.  Your body will begin borrowing minerals from your tissues (aging) and from your teeth and bones.  This is the beginning of all disease and breakdown of our cells.  This is an acidic state. Our bodies can not fight disease in an acidic state.  Our bodies are in a state of survival, they are not thriving.  As you can see there is a direct connection between the state of our soil and the increase is cancer and other diseases in our culture.  This is also why botox and other beauty treatments reign supreme in our society.  Rather than treating the breakdown of the cells from the inside, from the perspective of mineral loss, we age and topically treat our skin with harmful anti-aging modalities.

What kinds of things affect mineral absorption?
The health of our digestion affects how well we absorb the nutrients from the foods we consume, which is why I am such a huge advocate of fermented foods.  They support the absorption and bio-availability of the minerals within the foods being eaten.  Also our parathyroid gland regulates many mechanisms that influence the absorption, excretion and storage of minerals.  So the health of our parathyroid gland impacts our ability to use and store the minerals we absorb through our digestion.  Finally the kidneys support in filtering our blood and under normal conditions, adequate amounts of nutrients are “reabsorbed” when passing through the kidneys, ensuring that they return to the blood where they may be re-circulated and passed to needy cells. However, certain disorders and medications such as diuretics and antibiotics can disrupt the healthy functioning of the kidneys. Under such influences, a nutrient such as magnesium is excreted rather than reabsorbed.  So we have to address these underlying issues in digestion, parathyroid and kidneys to ensure that the minerals are being used properly by the body for disease prevention and anti-aging, which truly are, one in the same.

Understanding pH
pH is a measure of how we achieve a healthy buffering state for the body.  Increasing alkalinity and the PH of the body is essential.  It is one of the most fundamental ways that we regulate oxygen in our system, which is so critical to every aspect of function. The purpose is to get the mineral buffer that the body was engineered to use in place, this mineral buffer then manages the PH back into it's ideal range so the body can function at it's best.  pH is the abbreviation for potential hydrogen. The pH of any solution is the measure of its hydrogen-ion concentration. The higher the pH reading, the more alkaline and oxygen rich the fluid is. The lower the pH reading, the more acidic and oxygen deprived the fluid is. The pH range is from 0 to 14, with 7.0 being neutral.  We are talking about the pH of the body's fluids and tissues not about stomach acid. The body has to have a balanced pH like most living things on earth or it does not function correctly. The alkaline level is very important because research has proven that disease cannot survive in an alkaline state and they thrive in an acidic environment.  An acidic balance will: decrease the body's ability to absorb minerals and other nutrients, decrease the energy production in the cells, decrease it's ability to repair damaged cells, decrease it's ability to detoxify heavy metals, make tumor cells thrive, and make it more susceptible to fatigue and illness.  In the absence of oxygen, glucose undergoes fermentation to lactic acid. This causes the pH of the cell to drop from between 7.3 to 7.2 down to 7 and later to 6.5 in more advanced stages of cancer and in metastases the pH drops to 6.0 and even 5.7 or lower. Our bodies simply can not fight disease if our body pH is not properly balanced.  The body will try to compensate for acidic pH by using alkaline minerals. If the diet does not contain enough minerals to compensate, it will begin to borrow the minerals from your tissues, teeth and bones putting you into a catabolic state / bone loss.

How do I test my PH?
Urinary pH Test: The pH of the urine indicates how the body is working to maintain the proper pH of the blood. The urine reveals the alkaline building (anabolic) and acid tearing down (catabolic) cycles. The pH of urine indicates the efforts of the body via the kidneys, adrenals, lungs and gonads to regulate pH through the buffer salts and hormones. Urine can provide a fairly accurate picture of body chemistry, because the kidneys filter out the buffer salts of pH regulation and provide values based on what the body is eliminating. Urine pH can vary from around 4.5 to 9.0 for its extremes, but the ideal range is 5.8 to 6.8.

What type of minerals do you recommend?
I LOVE Greens Mix Powder by Premier Research Labs - it is a chlorophyl rich, whole barley, oat and wheat grass powder.  If you are allergic to wheat you most likely will not have a reaction to this product because they are using the grasses not the kernels. This product has not been treated with a mercury fumigant, which is a common practice in America if there is an infestation in a grain elevator.  Greens Mix is Mercury Free, Pesticide Free and Heavy Metal Free.  If you have been using a green powder that has been grown in America they are most likely not pesticide free. This product guaranteed Pesticide free. Something else to consider is the container for the greens.  Most containers are flimsy, easy to bend, plastic containers that have a very low barrier to oxygen, they are not nitrogen flushed and they do not block the light that causes the critical fatty acids in the greens powders to go rancid.  Depending on how long it's been sitting on the shelf, you are eating an oxidized time bomb that is rancid.  Premiers Greens Mix is packaged in a violet container that is guaranteed to block the light that causes rancidity of fats.  Instead of having 22% air in the container…Premier aerates the powder in nitrogen which drops the air in the container to 2% which slows down the rancidity process. Accelerated aging studies suggest this powder is good for 20 years.  Nobody in the industry can match this greens mix.  You can feel the difference, there are so many nutrients here that you just can't find in other foods or powders.  Take 1 tablespoon or 2 mixed in water or a  smoothie daily.
